IDEATel Home telemedicine Unit (HTU)
The first component is the home telemedicine unit (HTU) consisting of a specially modified computer with a modem connection to an existing telephone line. The HTU supports: (i) synchronous H.324 videoconferencing between patients and nurse case managers (NCMs) at the Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University (urban component) or the Joslin Diabetes Center at SUNY Upstate Medical Center (rural component); (ii) "one button" electronic transmission of fingerstick glucose and blood pressure measurements from FDA-cleared devices; (iii) a Web-browser and project-specific Internet Service Provider (ISP) account that allows patients to access to their own clinical data through graphic and other data displays; and (iv) secure web-based text messaging to case managers.
